BASIC SOURCES OF ECONOMIC STATISTICS

This guide is a selective list of basic sources of macro-level economic statistics. It represents a sampling of what is available at Princeton. It does not attempt to be comprehensive. Aside from economic indicators and financial data, most data does not exist in electronic format. Historical data in electronic format prior to 1950 is rare. Always seek the assistance of a librarian when trying to get a complete picture of what is available. Most governmental links provide current data only. Separate detailed guides are available for Finance, Trade, Health, Environment, and Sports statistics as well as micro-level data.

The basic question to ask when looking for economic data is "Who cares about what I am studying?" Unfortunately, the answer will often be no one. Ideally, look for an organization that is concerned with your research as part of its mission. Examples include the International Labor Organization focusing on labor research; the International Monetary Fund focusing on monetary and fiscal concerns; the World Bank focusing on development. What exists for one country may not exist for another country. Data is generally inconsistent across borders. Always look at the methodology.

With the exception of some governmental data, very little data is available for free via the WEB. Sites such as Resources for Economists on the Internet and the Princeton University Library Economics Homepage provide good starting points for what is available via the WEB.

CENSUS PUBLICATIONS:

Census publications are the core of any collection of statistical data. Basic information in a large variety of fields can be obtained from the information issued by the Bureau. The Bureau of the Census Catalog (SSRC Census Reference Z7554.U5U32) contains good descriptive lists of all Census publications. The Census Bureau publishes only their most widely used surveys, but more information is available, most of it electronically. Current census materials are located in SSRC and include the following areas: Population, Construction, Manufacturers, Business, Mineral Industries, Retail, Wholesale, Service Industries, Agriculture, Governments, Housing, Foreign Trade, and Transportation.

The University Data Library holds a comprehensive collection of Population and Housing censuses dating from 1940 and from Government censuses dating from 1962. A substantial portion of the 1980 and 1990 censuses are on Census CD, a single compact disc that allows easy downloading. The micro-level data for many censuses from the United States back to 1850 as well as other nations is available through the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series. Princeton has microdata from select other censuses.

For the earlier censuses, see Bibliography and Reel Index: A Guide to the Microform Edition of the United States Decennial Census Publications 1790-1970. The collection includes the special censuses. The guide can be found at: (SSRC) Z7554.U5R47 1975. The film holdings are located in Microforms under S00171.

OTHER CENSUS PUBLICATIONS

The Current Population Survey (CPS), a monthly interview survey conducted by the Census Bureau, provides a large amount of supplementary data on the economic status and activities of the population of the United States. The Current Population Reports appear as several series of individual reports providing current, historical, or projected data on various population and housing subjects. They are especially valuable for information on the years in between the census years. They are classed in the U.S. Government Documents collection under C3.186 and the series issued are:
P-20: Population characteristics
P-23: Special studies
P-25: Population estimates and projections
P-26: Local population estimates
P-27: Farm Population
P-28: Special censuses
P-60: Consumer income
P-70: Household economic studies
P-95: International population

The March issue is the main one. However specialized questions regarding issues such as school enrollment, computer ownership, voter registation, and food security are periodically asked. Listings documenting the occurrence of current population survey supplements are available from the September 1996 edition of Census and You, pages 8 & 9, and page 94 of a March 2002 technical report issued by the US Census Bureau.

Time series back to 1962 can be found using the CPS on Web.

III. MACROECONOMIC INTERNATIONAL SOURCES

In addition to the megasources found in Part I, the following sources will provide international macroeconomic data.

Background Sources

Two sources for background information and basic data are the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and the International Monetary Fund. The EIU produces the quarterly Country Profiles and the annual Country Reports. Issues from 1996 forward can be found online. Older issues are cataloged for Firestone Stacks. Another source to consider is The International Monetary Fund's Staff Country Reports.

Foreign Statistical Abstracts.
A collection of current volumes of the statistical abstracts of many foreign countries. These abstracts contain a wealth of statistics on a broad range of subjects. For older editions consult the Main Catalog or the microfiche collection in SSRC.
SSRC - Next to Ready Reference

Governmental and intergovernmental homepages are another means of obtaining recent data on countries. Finding data below the national level is usually difficult at best if not impossible. A few countries do provide extensive data from their statistical offices including subnational level data such as Canada's E-Stat, Indiastat.com, Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States' Eastview UDB Statistics, and China Data Online. Many nations provide online versions of their most recent statistical yearbooks.

The Library is a depository for materials from the United Nations and the European Communities and purchases the publications of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The publications of these organizations are a rich source of statistics on foreign countries and international economic conditions.
