Sample Search: Give the high price for Novell stock from January 25,
1995 to April 15, 1995 on a daily basis.
Finding the Code:
Step 1 - Type CODE into the "Program Number" area in the main
Datastream window, and press Enter. Enter the keyword
"Novell" in the new program window, press Enter, and choose the correct
item from the resulting list of matches. The resulting list
sometimes includes several instances of the chosen keyword.
In this case only two items contain the word Novell. Choose the item
which indicates it is listed in US currency by the
symbol, U$, the Novell stock with the mnemonic @NOVL or the
code number 729152.
Step 2 - The code for Novell alone will only provide stock
information in Datastream's default format, closing prices. To
obtain the high price, one must form a new data code by
appending the standard code of a specific datatype.
- To find how one indicates the "high price" datatype in
Datastream, return to the main Datastream windows by pressing the F2
function key on the keyboard. Enter HELP DT? in the "Program Number"
area. In the new program windows, type the number for equities datatypes,
press Enter, and choose the correct datatype from the resulting list,
(PH), for Price High. The full code then will be either 729152(PH) or
@NOVL(PH). Either form is acceptable.
Finding the Program:
Step 1 - Many programs are available for performing different
searches within Datastream's equities. Our search requires values from a
single series over a short period of time. To select a program from the
main Datastream window, first select Time Series as the type of request.
Next, select Equities as the type of data and then select the first of the
available programs under these headings: Up to 104 values for any series
in a calendar format. 301V automatically appears in the program number
window. Press enter.
Step 2 - You are prompted first to enter the code for the series
you are retrieving. Type 729152(PH) or @NOVL(PH), and then press tab to go
to the next item. Enter the frequency D for daily (weekly, monthly and
quarterly are also possible). Press tab and enter the dates to be
retrieved, in the form dd/mm/yy. After pressing enter, the desired data
will appear on the screen in calendar format. If you entered any
parameters incorrectly, the program will stop, describe your error, and
allow you to re-enter each item.

Things to Remember:
Certain equity
datatypes are not available for all countries. The help screens will
detail which datatypes work in which programs and country availability.
Datastream categorizes data availability into 2 groups: G1 countries and
G2 countries.
G1 Countries are countries for which full research level data is
available. The following G1 countries include company accounts data:
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany,
Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway,
Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland,
Thailand, United Kingdom, and the United States.
The following G1 countries do not include company accounts data:
Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Greece, India, Indonesia,
Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Portugal, South
Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Turkey, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe.
G2 Countries are countries for which restricted equity research
data is available. Please note that, as the data availability for these
countries is upgraded, announcements will be made on the 99 program. The
G2 countries are Cyprus, Czech Republic, Hungary, Iceland, Israel,
Jamaica, Jordan, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Slovakia, and Tunisia.
