German Literature to Illustrated Books
Ensemble Collection (programs, photographs, and posters of the Berliner
Ensemble state theater of the German Democratic Republic from the 1950s
and 60s. Much of the material relates to Bertolt Brecht, the actor, writer,
and most important member of the Berliner Ensemble. Though most of the collection is in German, there are several programs from the English National Theatre.
The photographs include pictures not only of the Ensemble but also of Brecht,
Vittorio De Sica, Yves Montand, Simone Signoret, and Paul Robeson).
Louise Bogan Papers (selected notes, drafts, holograph and typescript manuscripts, and correspondence of Bogan. Included are her translation of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's novel Elective Affinities and a large number of critical essays concerning the works of W. H. Auden, R. P. Blackmur, Elizabeth Bowen, Isak Dinesen, Paul Eluard, Andre Gide, Goethe, Henry James, Ezra Pound, Rainer Maria Rilke, Paul Rosenfeld, Paul Valery, Virginia Woolf, W. B. Yeats, and others. Also present are book and poetry reviews for the New Yorker; lectures on poetry; essays on folk art and literary criticism; poems and galley proofs for Poems and New Poems (1941); a small selection of poems by Herbert Cahoon; and correspondence containing some lettersfrom Jerome Mellquist).
Federal Republic of Germany Anti-Communist Collection (anti-communist propaganda from West Germany, including newspapers, serials, leaflets, and stickers).
Arthur Glaeser Papers (Glaeser's works, correspondence, diaries (1923,1938, 1940, 1942, 1945-1948), a sketchbook of pencil drawings (1920), a bibliography, ledgers (1916, 1925-1942), and printed matter. The collection contains an autograph manuscript of DAS SCHWARZE BUCH (1923) along with a diary Glaeser kept during the writing of the book, and the typed manuscrip twith holograph corrections of DER WIND VOR TAG (1948), which he wrote under the pseudonym of "Albrecht Homer". Included among his works are poems to his wife, Kathi. Albrecht Glaeser, essays, literary criticism, and epigrams. In addition, there is a bibliography of magazine articles (1929-1939) written by Glaeser and his wife).
Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von, 1749-1832 (general manuscripts; John Wild Autograph Collection; Laurence Hutton Collection of Life and Death Masks; Benno Elkan Collection of Goethe).
Philosophy Manuscripts of Walter Kaufmann (original manuscripts and translations by Kaufmann, professor of philosophy at Princeton. The collection contains typed manuscripts with holograph corrections and page and galley proofs for seven original works: Critique of Religion and Philosophy (1958), Faith of a Heretic (1961) and its German translation Der Glaube Eines Ketzers (1965), From Shakespeare to Existentialism (1959), Hegel (1965), Nietzsche (1956), Tragedy and Philosophy (1968), and a book of poetry, Cain and Other Poems (1962). There are also Kaufmann's translations of Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil (1966), On the Genealogy of Morals (translated with R. J. Hollingdale) and Ecce Homo (1967), and The Will to Power (1967), and a group of poets in Twenty German Poets (1962). In addition, there are Kaufmann's Ph.D. thesis from Harvard, Nietzsche's Theory of Values (1947), an article on Nietzsche for the Encyclopedia of Philosophy, and a mimeographed copy of his translation of Goethe's Faust (1961).
Thomas Mann Collection (works of Mann including lectures, addresses, radio broadcasts (1942-1943), proofs for Der Erwahlte and a chapter of Lotte in Weimar, and a facsimile of Die Betrogene, as well as correspondence between Mann and many German and American intellectuals, such as Charles Neider, Arthur Hubscher, Hans Hulsen, Erich von Kahler, and Caroline Newton. In addition, there are memorabilia, photographs of Mann and several friends (Arturo Toscanini, Bruno Walter, etc.), and printed matter relating to Mann, as well as articles and essays of which he is the subject).
Caroline Newton Papers (works, note books, correspondence, and photographs of Newton as well as some papers of others. The collection contains Newton's unpublished manuscript of translations of Goethe's Conversations with Eckermann and Wilhelm Meister, the typed manuscript and galley and page proofs of The Letters of Thomas Mann to Caroline Newton, and miscellaneous writings by Newton; her correspondents include W. H. Auden, Sigmund Freud, Sir Shane Leslie, Wilmarth S. Lewis, and Katharina Pringsheim Mann (Mrs. Thomas Mann). In addition, there are papers about Leonard Jerome, the father of Jennie Jerome and grandfather of Winston Churchill, including an autograph, unpublished manuscript, The Life of Leonard Jedrome of New York, by his grandson, Sir Shane Leslie, and an essay by Leslie, entitled "Winston, a Cousinly Memory."The collection also contains correspondence and photographs of the Jerome, Churchill, and Leslie families).
George Madison Priest Papers (a translation by Priest (Class of 1894) of Goethe's Faust (1932) and the typescript of his Anthology of the Classical Period of German Literature (1934), as well as a revision of W. P. Andrew's translation of Faust (1929) by Priest and K. E. Weston. Also included are Priest's lectures in German literature on Klopstock, Lessing, von Scheffel, and Sudermann, a speech, and a report for the FBI regarding suspected German sympathizers in 1917. Miscellaneous additional material includes some of Priest's correspondence, an original pastel drawing of Goethe by Sebbers, a pencil sketch of Priest, and printed material).
