    This encyclopedia is an attempt to bring together a survey of those processes that seek to prevent or contain war and ameliorate its violence. Articles include national surveys, conceptual essays, definitions of concepts, descriptions of key events, and bibliographies for further reading.
     
  • Facts on International Relations and Security Trends (FIRST)

    FIRST is a free-of-charge service for politicians, journalists, researchers and the interested public, FIRST is a joint project of the International Relations and Security Network (ISN) and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The integrated database system contains clearly documented information from research institutes around the world covering areas in the field of international relations and security, such as hard facts on armed conflicts and peace keeping, arms production and trade, military expenditure, armed forces and conventional weapons holding, nuclear weapons, chronology, statistics and other reference data.
     
  • International Encyclopedia of Terrorism.

    This encyclopedia defines terrorism as "the indiscriminate use of force to achieve political aims," thus giving a broader meaning to the term than is typically thought of today. Short articles (generally 2-4 pages) provide highlights of terrorist acts ranging back as early as ancient Greece and Rome to the mid-1990s.
     
  • Jane's World Insurgency and Terrorism.

    The FMSO was formed in 1986 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, as the Soviet Army Studies Office. Its original mission was to provide necessary content for those studying the Soviet Army. Today it conducts research and publishes studies from unclassified sources about the military establishments, doctrines, and practices of foreign armed forces, and studies a variety of civil-military and transnational security issues.

Many of the resources found on the Politics Databases Page are excellent for locating journal articles, working papers, and other information on geopolitical and security topics. Below are some more specialized tools that may also be particularly useful.

  • Jane's Online (PU only)
    Founded in 1898, Jane's Information Group provides a host of information products and consultancy services including technical and market information on military, law enforcement, and transportation equipment; country-by-country threat assessments; and news analysis. When using Jane's, the easiest approach is to go directly to the sources Princeton subscribes to by clicking on the My Account button. Princeton subscribes only to the following Jane's Online products:

    Founded in 1996, StratFor (short for “Strategic Forecasting”) provides up-to-date geopolitical analysis and forecasts focused on international political, economic, and security issues.
     
  • Columbia International Affairs Online (PU only)
    CIAO publishes online a wide range of scholarship from 1991 onward that includes working papers from university research institutes, NGO occasional papers, foundation-funded research projects, conference proceedings, books, journals, and policy briefs.
     
  • Peace Research Abstracts Journal.

    This is not an online database, but a relevant index for the topic of international conflict resolution published six times a year by the Peace Research Institute- Dundas (in Ontario, Canada). It provides indexing and abstracts for books, journal articles, government publications, scholarly papers, major speeches and research studies concerning peace studies and international relations. Each issue has an author and subject index, and the last issue of each year has an annual cumulative index.
     
  • Policyfile (PU only)
    Provides indexing and abstracts of research publications addressing the complete range of public policy research. PolicyFile draws its content from public policy think tanks, university research programs, research organizations, and trade publishers. The database consists of over 50,000 abstracts dating from 1990 to present, with some full-text where available and links to organizational home pages.
     
  • Air University Library Index to Military Periodicals

    SCAMPI is an index to journal articles on military and naval science, operational warfare, joint planning, and national and international politics, as well as reports from RAND and the GAO. SCAMPI is a cooperative effort of the Joint Forces Staff College Library, the National Defense University Library and the Defense Technical Information Center. Covers articles published from 1997-present.
     
  • EBSCO Military & Government Collection (PU only)
    This database offers a collection of articles from nearly 400 periodicals and academic journals, as well as a few hundred government pamphlets, covering all branches of the military and government.
     
  • Government Periodicals Universe (PU only)
    Government Periodicals Universe indexes periodicals published by the United States government on a wide array of disciplines. Search by keyword or use the controlled vocabulary for subject searching. Coverage of periodicals generally goes back to the late 1980s. A list of links to online periodicals is also provided.
     
  • Lexis Nexis Academic (PU only)
    While L-N is a usual suspect for finding news articles, the sources that deal specifically with geopolitical and security issues are somewhat dispersed among various files.   • Center for Strategic and International Studies
